Manali, Himachal Pradesh
Manali is the classic Himalayan holiday – snow in winter, green valleys and waterfalls after the rains, cosy cafés in Old Manali and some of the most scenic roads in India. I've stayed at several hotels here, and the reviews are below.
Getting there
Most travellers take an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi or Chandigarh. The nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu), about 50 km away. Driving yourself is spectacular but the final stretch can be slow during peak season.
Things to do
Visit Hadimba Temple and the cafés of Old Manali and Vashisht, head up to Solang Valley for paragliding and the ropeway, and drive through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu in Lahaul. Rohtang Pass needs a permit and opens only in the warmer months; Gulaba and Marhi on the same road are good alternatives.
Best time to visit
March to June is pleasant and busy. December to February brings snow – beautiful, but some roads close. The monsoon (July–September) is green and quiet but has landslide risk, so keep buffer days.
