Mulshi & Tamhini Ghat
Mulshi and Tamhini are Pune's backyard escape – a big lake surrounded by the Sahyadri, a ghat road that turns into a corridor of waterfalls in the monsoon, and resorts tucked into the hills.
Getting there
Mulshi is around 40–45 km west of Pune, roughly 1.5 hours by road via Paud. Tamhini Ghat continues beyond the lake and drops down towards Kolad and the Konkan coast, which makes it a great route for a longer ride or drive.
Monsoon in Tamhini
From July to September the ghat is at its best – fog, green slopes and waterfalls on almost every bend. Weekends get very crowded, roads can be slippery, and access to some spots is restricted for safety, so go early on a weekday if you can.
Stay & camping
Malhar Machi is a mountain resort with big valley views (video below), and there are plenty of lakeside cottages and campsites on the Mulshi backwaters for a night under the stars.
Best for riders
The Mulshi–Tamhini road is one of the favourite weekend rides around Pune. See the motorcycle rides page for routes I've ridden on my Meteor 350.
